Green Cover exists to help people regenerate, steward, and share God's creation for future generations. Day to day, that means selling cover crop seed from south of Hastings, Nebraska. They operate five entities, with a staff of 50 to 60. They didn't come to us with a problem in the books. Their finance team is good, and they knew their numbers.

What they didn't have was a way to see all of it at once. Five entities meant five sets of financials and no combined view. And the one person who held the whole picture was David Nelsen, the CEO, who was personally walking owners and staff through the finances because there was no other way for anyone to understand them.

What we did together

We pulled the financials from all five entities and combined them, then built dashboards and graphs that made the picture readable to people who don't live in spreadsheets. We didn't build it once and hand it over. We iterated with their team for about nine months, on site several times, revising until the reporting actually answered the questions people had.

Then we took over the financial walkthroughs, so David didn't have to do all of them. Today that runs at five to seven video walkthroughs a month, alongside monthly financial updates and one annual planning session.

The engagement has gotten smaller over time, on purpose. We started inside their quarterly meetings; now it runs on monthly updates, the annual planning session, and the video walkthroughs.

Where they are now

Over the last twelve months, Green Cover has run its highest net profit in the past six years. We won't take credit for that. Mike's own framing: "I don't think it's anything that I do specifically, other than just giving them clarity on the financials so that they can make decisions. They tend to make better decisions if they know their numbers."

Mike's read on what changed for David: it came "when he could take all the things that he was just in his head and actually put it down in a way that made sense to others."

Green Cover has since referred us to several other businesses, two of which are clients today.
